Traditional Balsamic
Vinegar Museum
What distinguishes balsamic vinegar from
other vinegars is not only the substance from which it is made,
but the alchemy of time and the knowledge belonging to a
tradition
that boasts ancient origins. The operations that take
balsamic vinegar, the primary product of the grapevine, to the
table are codified in a sort of ritual in which nothing is left
to chance; each passage has been scientifically explained and
yet what happens in the bowels of the casks remains essentially
a mystery. The visitor who walks through the rooms in the museum
will complete this voyage step by step and will be fascinated by
this product that encapsulates the history of a piece of Emilia.
He will discover the complexity of its preparation, value the
need to protect its name, control its production which cannot be
industrialised and appreciate its uniqueness. The balsamic
vinegar was born in the family acetaie, jealously guarded
and often given as a dowry to daughters, now is a product known
worldwide for its uniqueness and particularity.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 to 13 and from 15 to
19. Visit mere € 2, € 4 visit with tasting vinegar. If you stay
at Ca 'Penelope will be happy to book a visit for you, or you
can contact directly the museum at 059 781 614. Distance from Ca

Acetaia "La Noce"
(private family production
of balsamic vinegar)
The balsamic vinegar was
born in Modena in the attics of private homes, we always
recommend our guests to visit both the museum, and the family
production too, where you can see in detail the ancient
tradition that is still alive in Modena. "La Noce" is a
beautiful acetaia, property of Muzzarelli family that for
centuries have produced balsamic vinegar, the vinegar barrels
pass from father to son (eldest son) as a legacy not only
financial, but also as historical knowledge. The vinegar
production is composed by 160 barrels, the visit is free, but
you should book it before. When you are in Cą Penelope ask
Valentina who will organize your visit. Distance: 8 Km |

The Salse di Nirano
This is a Nature Reserve where it's nice to
go for a walk in a sunny day. The Salse (Sauces) are emissions of salty mud
and cold muddy water that are deposited in form of a cone with
small craters on top where gases and bituminous substances
bubble, creating spectacular characteristics. A huge basin is
protected by a reserve that includes a little wood, shrubs,
ponds, lawns, land for cultivation and vineyards which, all
together, create an example of a hilly landscape of the first
slopes of Modena’s Apennines, with the particularity of numerous
mud holes which give an almost lunar aspect to the hilly
landscape. For further information contact the visitor center Cą

The waterfalls
of Bucamante
The waterfalls were formed by the
River Bucamante which sprung in Monfestino and is an important
tributary to the Tiepido river. The River took the name of the
legend about two young lovers, the noble Odina and the shepherd
Titiro. Because of their impossible love they decided to throw
themselves in the river which formed a hole (buca) in this point
and from that moment on the river was called “Buca degli Amenti”
(Hole of Lovers). From the evocative path along the river
different waterfalls of different levels can be admired. The
Bucamente is a place of particular beauty, an ideal destination
for walks and short ecological excursions for all who love to be
outside. In approximately 3km from the street you reach the
waterfalls.
It is such a charming place that we remind to respect the nature and not creating
noise or throwing rubbish. Distance from Cą Penelope: 14km. |
